Recognizing Perimenopause and Menopause

Around 1.3 million women enter menopause each year in the United States. The average age of onset is 51, but perimenopause can begin in the mid-40s and last 4 to 8 years. About 85% of women experience at least one disruptive symptom.

These symptoms are the classic signs of low estrogen, progesterone, and testosterone — hormones that affect nearly every system in your body. The good news: they're treatable.

What Is Bioidentical Hormone Replacement Therapy?

Bioidentical hormones are structurally identical to the hormones your body naturally produces. Formulations like estradiol and micronized progesterone work with your body's existing receptor systems and are dosed to restore hormones to a healthy, optimized range.

The clinical evidence base continues to grow. The E3N French cohort study found no increased breast cancer risk with micronized progesterone. The KEEPS trial confirmed safety and cognitive benefits when therapy is started near menopause onset.

Per Menopause Society position statements, hormone therapy is associated with a roughly 75-95% reduction in hot flash frequency, along with improvements in sleep, mood, and vaginal health.

Frequently Asked Questions About BHRT

Is bioidentical hormone therapy safe?

When prescribed and monitored by a qualified physician, BHRT has a favorable safety profile. The KEEPS trial showed cognitive benefits and safety when started near menopause.

The E3N cohort study (80,000+ women) found no increased breast cancer risk with micronized progesterone, unlike synthetic progestins. The Asymmetric Health team monitors your levels regularly and adjusts your protocol to minimize risk.

How quickly will I notice results?

Many women notice improvements in sleep, mood, and hot flashes within 2-4 weeks. Full optimization typically takes 2-3 months as we dial in your dosage based on follow-up labs and symptom tracking.

What hormones are included in a BHRT protocol?

Depending on your lab results and symptoms, your protocol may include estradiol, progesterone, testosterone, and DHEA. Each is dosed individually based on your unique biochemistry.

Can you treat perimenopause, or only full menopause?

Yes. Perimenopause, the transitional period that can begin years before your last period, is when many of the most disruptive symptoms start. We treat both perimenopause and menopause with personalized protocols. Take our free menopause symptom quiz to assess your symptoms.

Do you offer telehealth for menopause care?

Yes. All consultations and follow-ups are available via telehealth for patients anywhere in Washington state. Many women find this more convenient for ongoing care.

BHRT vs HRT: what's the difference?

HRT (hormone replacement therapy) is the umbrella term for treating menopausal hormone decline. BHRT (bioidentical hormone replacement therapy) is HRT that uses hormones structurally identical to the ones your body makes - estradiol, progesterone, and testosterone - rather than synthetic analogs. We tailor the type, dose, and delivery method to your labs and symptoms.

How much does BHRT cost?

Care starts with a one-time evaluation, then a monthly membership, with hormones passed through at cost with zero markup. Because we are direct-pay, pricing is transparent with no surprise bills, and many patients use HSA/FSA funds.

Does insurance cover BHRT?

We are a direct-pay practice and do not bill insurance. Our evaluation and membership pricing is transparent and often comparable to traditional copays and deductibles.

Many patients find the quality of care and time spent with an Asymmetric Health clinician far exceeds what insurance-based practices offer.
